Disclosed are an electrochemical sensor for the determination of the partial pressure of oxygen in a bloodstream comprising a cathode 20 and an anode 21 immersed in an electrolyte 17 contained in a chamber 23 defined by an oxygen gas permeable membrane 19 wherein the conductor 12 forming the anode 21 is folded into a "U" shape 22 so that the exposed distal end surface 13 thereof faces the distal end surfaces 13 of the cathode 20, and a method for manufacturing the electrochemical sensor.
