Abstract of the Disclosure A method of making silanes, carbosilanes or polycarbo- silanes having at least one silicon-bonded organic group, linked to the silicon atom via a Si-C bond by electroreduction of a compound (I), having a substituent -RX wherein R is a divalent carbon or hydrocarbon compound which may be substituted and X is halogen in the presence of (II), a silane of the general formula R'4-a-bSiXa(RX)b wherein R' is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group, a group containing H, C and O atoms, S atoms and/or P atoms and groups consisting of C, H and N atoms, a has a value of 1 to 4, b has a value of 0 to 3 and a?b has a value of 2, 3 or 4.
