ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus and method for cleaning oxidation and other contamination from metal foil recording tape by passing it through a mercury bath to place a positive charge on the tape after which the tape is cooled and, in one modification, pre- conditioned as the tape is advanced through a negatively charged acid bath. The tape is then rinsed and jet sprayed in a water bath and is dewatered in an alcohol bath prior to being wound on a take-up reel.
