Abstract A process for the electrolytic cleavage of lignins at a yield greater than 6% by an electro-chemical technique which involves passing an electric current through an aqueous alkaline solution of the lignin at a temperature in excess of 100°C whilst maintaining mixing of the solution and the lignin solution being contained in an electro-chemical cell which is adapted to withstand the corrosive effects of the hot alkali solution, the temperature and consequent pressure. By the process, useful products such as vanillin, vanillic acid etc may be obtained. SG/96
