2105283 9216027 PCTABS00016 Material having enhanced electrochromic and electrocatalytic activity is prepared by electrodeposition, onto a cathodic substrate, of material from a solution comprising ions of at least one metal (A) capable of forming a hydrogen bronze, especially tungsten, molybdenum or vanadium, and ions of at least one metal (B) from Group VIII of the periodic table, especially nickel, cobalt, palladium, platinum, iron or ruthenium, or by reductive co-deposition from such a solution. The material may be used as an electrocatalyst in the electrochemical oxidation of organic compounds, especially alcohols such as methanol and ethanol, and more especially in alcohol fuel cells, in which reduced acid concentration and increased alcohol concentration may be used.
