ELECTROCHROMIC DISPLAY APPARATUS Abstract of the Disclosure The specification discloses an electrochromic display apparatus which comprises a container for an electro- chromic solution, a pair of electrodes, namely an indication electrode and a counter-electrode, disposed in the container, and an electric circuit for impressing a D.C. pulse across the electrodes and thereafter for short circuiting the electrodes together. By means of the short circuiting, a color indicating substance formed on the indication electrode by the electrochemical reduction reaction or the electrochemical oxidation reaction is dissolved from the indication electrode into the solution so as to erase the indication. The short- circuiting avoids the usual contamination of the indication electrode produced by the prior art method of erasing by means of impressing a pulse of inverse polarity across the electrodes. A longer life for the apparatus can thus be achieved in com- parison with conventional apparatus since the contaminating substance on the indication electrodes of the prior art apparatus actively reduces the life thereof.
