ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electrochromic display device, consisting of an electrochemically reversible coloring display material, an electrolyte, a display electrode and a counter electrode, where- in the counter electrode includes a reversibly oxidizable re- active material composed of an iron compound insoluble in the electrolyte and, wherein the electrolyte contacts the display electrode and the counter electrode. The electrochromic display devices have improved temperature performance and response speed and the display characteristics are maintained for at least 3 x 105 display cycles.
