According to one embodiment of the present invention, an electrochromic rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle includes an electrochromic mirror (110, 920) having a variable reflectivity, a glare sensor (160, 234) for sensing levels of light directed towards the front element from the rear of the vehicle, an ambient sensor (232) for sensing levels of ambient light, a display (146, 170) positioned behind the partially transmissive, partially reflective portion of the reflector for displaying information therethrough; and a control circuit (230, 900) coupled to the sensors and the display. The control circuit determines whether daytime or nightime conditions are present as a function of the ambient light level sensed by the glare sensor to control a contrast ratio of light originating from the display and light reflecting from the partially transmissive, partially reflective area of the reflector.

Dans un mode de réalisation, l'invention concerne un ensemble rétroviseur électrochromique pour véhicule, qui comporte un miroir électrochromique (110, 920) de réflectivité variable, un capteur d'éblouissement (160, 234) qui capte les niveaux lumineux dirigés vers l'élément avant à partir de l'arrière du véhicule, un capteur ambiant (232) qui capte les niveaux lumineux ambiants, un afficheur (146, 170), placé derrière la zone partiellement transmissive et réfléchissante du réflecteur, qui affiche des informations; et un circuit de commande (230, 900) couplé aux capteurs et à l'afficheur. Le circuit de commande détermine la présence des conditions de jour ou de nuit en fonction du niveau lumineux ambiant capté par le capteur ambiant. Dans les conditions de jour, le circuit de commande réagit aux niveaux lumineux captés par le capteur d'éblouissement afin de réguler le taux de contraste de la lumière émanant de l'afficheur et de la lumière réfléchissant de la zone partiellement transmissive et partiellement réfléchissante du réflecteur.
