An electrocoating system with multistage voltage application includes an electrocoating bath filled with a coating material and having inlet and outlet sides, an object to be electrocoated with the coating material, the object serving as first electrode means for being immersed and fed in the coating material, second electrode means dis- posed in a plurality of stages arranged successively from the inlet to outlet sides of the electrocoating bath, power supply means for applying independently variable voltages respectively from the second electrode means to the object, and diode means, connected respectively to at least the sec- ond electrode means ranging from a first stage positioned at the inlet side of the electrocoating bath to a stage preced- ing a final stage positioned at the outlet side of the ele- ctrocoating bath, for preventing the second electrode means from being electrocoated with the coating material. At least one of the second electrode means in the plurality of stages includes a plurality of electrodes, the diode means including diodes forward-connected respectively to the electrodes. Therefore, any undesirable electric currents which would otherwise electrocoat the electrodes are pre- vented from flowing by the diodes.
