The present invention provides for polarization independence in electrooptic waveguides. Specifically, in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, an electrooptic waveguide for an optical signal is provided. The waveguide comprises a plurality of control electrodes, an optical waveguide core defining a primary axis of propagation, and an electrooptic cladding at least partially surrounding the core. The control electrodes are positioned to generate a contoured electric field across the cladding. The cladding is poled along a poling contour. The contoured electric field and/or the poling contour are asymmetric relative to a plane intersecting the waveguide core and extending along the primary axis of propagation. The electrooptic cladding defines at least two cladding regions on opposite sides of the waveguide core.
La présente invention permet d'obtenir une indépendance de polarisation dans des guides d'ondes électro-optiques. Spécifiquement, selon un mode de réalisation de la présente invention, est produit un guide d'onde électro-optique pour un signal optique. Le guide d'onde comprend une pluralité d'électrodes de commande, un coeur de guide d'ondes optiques définissant un axe primaire de propagation, et une gaine électro-optique entourant au moins partiellement le coeur. Les électrodes de commande sont positionnés de manière à générer un champ électrique à contour sur la gaine. La gaine est polarisée sur un contour de polarisation. Le champ électrique à contour et/ou le contour de polarisation sont asymétriques par rapport à un plan entrecoupant le coeur du guide d'onde et s'étendant le long de l'axe primaire de propagation, du fait des électrodes de commande qui présentent soit des formes différentes soit des positions différentes par rapport au coeur du guide d'onde.
