ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Coatings for carbon electrodes used as anodes in the electrolysis of aluminum are disclosed. The coatings are applied as an aqueous system that contains zinc chloride and powdered alumina. Although both cheap to produce and easy to apply, these coatings, after drying, provide a meaningful level of protection to the anode, particularly as regards reaction with oxygen.
