ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An arc furnace electrode, more particularly for the production of electric steel, comprises a top portion of metal and a replaceable bottom portion of consumable or slowly consumable material interconnected by means of a screw nipple or the like. The top portion is provided with a feed duct and a return duct and has a protective covering, at least partially and more particularly in its bottom region. The protective covering is represented by a detachably surmounted sheath of resistant material which is electrically conductive. The sheath can be subdivided into individual segments and the construction of screw- mounted units with internally disposed recesses to accommodate elastic and electrically conductive materials especially advantageous properties.
