ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved method or joining sections of a segmented electrode is provided wherein a fusible, electrically-conductive, solid insert is positioned in a gap between faces of abutting electrode sections, so that, upon the passage of an electric current through the electrode, the insert melts and flows to fill the gap with electrically-conductive fluid medium. In this way, local overheating in the joint owing to non face-to-face contact is avoided.
