ABSTRACT A composite electrodeposited coating and a method of forming such a coating. The coating comprises a metal matrix deposited from a plating bath and incorporates particles which are insoluble in the bath. The particles include a chromium-containing substance, an aluminium- containing substance, and an oxide of a rare earth metal, a metal from group IV of the Periodic Table or aluminium oxide.
