ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to an electrodynamic transverse elastic wave generator, which is intended for use in determining the elastic characteristics of foundation ground for large structures, in particular nuclear power stations. In order to overcome some drawbacks of the prior art, the wave generator accord- ing to the invention comprises a first cylinder provided with means for releasably locking it at selectable levels within a lined vertical hole in the ground and a second cylinder of electrically conducting material attached to the first cylinder as an axial prolongation thereof and housing two overlying elec- trical coils urged resiliently towards the ends of said second cylinder. Said coils are alternately fed with pulse current of high intensity, which produces in said coils instantaneous mag- netic repulsion forces which cause in turn sudden axial displace- ment stresses in the cylinders.
