A semiconductor electro luminescent diode having a body of a semiconductor material with the body having a pair of spaced opposed end surfaces, side surfaces and top and bottom surfaces. The body includes therein an active layer which extends from one end surface to a point spaced from the other end surface. The active layer is of a width narrower than the distance between the side surfaces. Also, the active layer has a portion adjacent the other end surface of the body which is tapered to come to a point. First clad layers of a material having an index of refraction smaller than that of the active layer are at opposite sides of the active layer and extend between the end of the active layer and the other end surface of the body. Second clad layers of a material having an index of refraction larger than that of the first clad layers but less than the index of refraction of the active layer are on the first clad layer. Radiation generated in the active layer and emitted from the pointed end of the active layer extends in area in the portion of the second clad layer between the pointed end of the active layer and the other end of the body so that the area of the beam of radiation emitted from the -diode is larger than the area of the beam formed in the active layer.
La diode électroluminescente à semi-conducteur comporte un corps en matériau semi-conducteur; le corps comprend une paire de surfaces d'extrémité opposées et espacées, des surfaces latérales et des surfaces supérieure et inférieure. Le corps comprend une couche active qui s'étend d'une surface d'extrémité à un point distant de l'autre surface d'extrémité. La largeur de la couche active est plus étroite que la distance entre les surfaces latérales. En outre, la couche active comprend une partie adjacente à l'autre surface d'extrémité du corps qui est biseautée jusqu'à former une pointe. Les premières couches métallisées de matériau, qui ont un indice de réfraction plus petit que celui de la couche active, sont situées sur les côtés opposés de la couche active et s'étendent entre l'extrémité de la couche active et l'autre surface d'extrémité du corps. Les deuxièmes couches métallisées de matériau ont un indice de réfraction plus grand que celui des premières couches métallisées, mais inférieur à l'indice de réfraction de la couche active, et elles sont situées sur la première couche métallisée. Le rayonnement produit dans la couche active et émis à partir de l'extrémité pointue de cette dernière s'étend sur une partie de la deuxième couche métallisée, entre l'extrémité pointue de la couche active et l'autre extrémité du corps, de sorte que la zone couverte par le faisceau de rayonnement émis par la diode est plus grande que la zone couverte par le faisceau formé dans la couche active.
