ABSTRACT ELECTROLYSIS APPARATUS An electrolysis apparatus comprises a plurality of cells (14a..... 141) connected in series both on the current flow path (an electrical course being connected across end ones of electrodes 10) and the electrolyte/gas flow path (electrolyte entering at 16 and gas issuing from outlet 18), the cells including at least one series of gas generating cells (14a.....14d) followed by at least one cooling cell (14e,14f). In the example shown, the end electrodes (10) of cells 14e,14f are short circuited at 22 so that these cells are not active to generate gas and instead the electrolyte and gas flowing through them undergoes cooling. The example shown is for generating detonating gas but may be modified for generating oxygen and hydrogen at separate outlets.
