ABSTRACT Improvements in the bipolar refining process for lead are described, comprising using an electrolyte containing at least- about 85 g/L lead (as lead fluosilicate) and not more than 85 g/L free fluosilicic acid; using an initial current density of from about 240 to about 450 A/m2 ; maintaining the anode overvoltage at a value below which impurities will dissolve from the slimes, and maintaining the electrical current at the maximum possible value, related to the internal resistance of the cell and the desired anode overvoltage. These improvements result in slimes which adhere firmly to the electrodes, and in strong, coherent lead deposits which are easily strippable by mechanical means.
