2148239 9410359 PCTABS00032 An electrode (4, 10) and an electrolytic cell in which the electrode includes a plate (22, 106) having electrode material (82, 142) attached to at least one side thereof. A header opening (38, 40, 130, 136) is provided in the electrode plate and has a plurality of slots (46, 54, 132, 138) radiating therefrom towards the center of the plate. The electrolytic cell includes an electrode (4, 10) spaced from a separator (6) such as a membrane or diaphragm by a gasket member (8) of universal design. The electrodes (4, 10), separator (6) and gaskets (8) have a header opening (204, 206, 208, 210) extending therethrough with slots (46, 54, 132, 138) radiating from the header openings in the anode and cathode plates (22, 106) to provide fluid communication between the anode and cathode compartments (200, 202) and the header openings (204, 206, 208, 210).
