ABSTRACT Hypochlorites, such as alkali metal hypochlorites, are made by electrolyzing brine in a cell having three or more compart- ments or zones therein, wherein anode and cathode compartments are separated from at least one intervening buffer compartment by ration- active permselective membranes of a hydrolyzed copolymer of tetra- fluoroethylene and a fluorinated perfluorovinyl ether or of a sulfostyrenated fluorinated ethylene propylene polymer or by such a permeselective membrane on the cathode side plus a porous asbestos diaphragm on the anode side when feeding chlorine gas to the buffer zone at such a rate and under such conditions as to produce hypo- chlorite therein. The hypochlorite may be converted to chlorate externally of the cell or, in a variation of the process, may be converted to chlorate in the buffer compartment.
