ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is provided a process for the indirect electrolytic oxidation of elemental phosphorus to phosphorous acid. The process comprises subjecting an electrolysis medium comprising elemental phosphorus and an aqueous solution of hydrogen halide to electrolysis, and thereafter recovering phosphorous acid. The process provides simple, effective and efficient means of disposal for the large volume of hydrogen halide produced during the conversion of phosphorus trihalide to the desired acid.
