Finely divided particles of alumina are electrolytically reduced to aluminium in an electrolytic reduction vessel (11) having a plurality of vertically disposed, non-consumable anodes (16) and a plurality of vertically disposed, dimensionally stable cathodes (18) in closely spaced, alternating arrangement with the anodes. A horizontally disposed, gas bubble generator (35) is located at the vessel bottom, underlying the cathodes and the spaces between each pair of adjacent electrodes. The vessel contains a molten electrolyte bath (24) composed of (1) NaF+AlF3 eutectic, (2) KF+AIF3 eutectic and (3) LiF. The alumina particles are maintained in suspension in the molten electrolyte bath by rising gas bubbles generated at the anodes and at the gas bubble generator during the reduction process.
De fines particules d'alumine sont réduites électrolytiquement en aluminium dans une cuve de réduction électrolytique (11) comportant une pluralité d'anodes non consommables montées verticalement (16) et une pluralité de cathodes dimentionnellement stables montées verticalement (18) en alternance avec les anodes. Un générateur de bulles de gaz (35) est monté horizontalement au fond de la cuve, sous les cathodes et les espaces entre chaque paire d'électrodes adjacentes. La cuve contient un bain d'électrolyte fondu (24) composé 1) d'eutectique NaF + AlF3, 2) d'eutectique Kf + AIF3 et 3) de LiF. Les particules d'alumine sont maintenues en suspension dans le bain d'électrolyte fondu par les bulles de gaz montantes produites par les anodes et le générateur de bulles durant le processus de réduction.
