Abstract of the disclosure: This process is carried out in electrochemical cells which are non-partitioned or are partitioned by at least one separator and have a gas diffusion electrode and a gas space located laterally to the direction of flow of the electrolyte. In this process, the electrolyte is caused to flow, by means of gravity, through the electro- chemical cell in such a manner that the gas diffusion electrode is at least partially wetted.
