Treatment of liquid passing through a reactor which has at least one pair of electrodes. The liquid is subjected to direct current to provide any one of a number of effects, including chlorination treatment, direct disinfection or removal of unwanted solids or elements. The polarity of the current passing through the electrodes is reversed to enhance the useful life of the electrodes. During the reversal of polarity a period of zero current is maintained and is found to enhance the life of the electrodes.

On applique du courant continu au liquide pour produire un des effets suivants tels que le traitement de chloration, la désinfection directe ou l'élimination d'éléments ou de particules solides indésirables. On inverse la polarité du courant qui traverse les électrodes pour accroître leur durée de vie et on maintient pendant cette inversion de la polarité une période de courant nul pour accroître encore plus la vie utile desdites électrodes.
