A B S T R A C T A material for selective absorption of solar energy in the visible and near infrared range and little emissivity of the absorbed thermal energy in the infrared range comprises aluminum having a purity of 99.92% or more by weight as substrate, porous anodic oxide film 3µ or less in thickness formed on the surface of the substrate, and metallic particles electrochemically filling the micropores of the anodic oxide film. The material is produced by subjecting the aluminum to anodic electrolysis thereby forming anodic oxide film of 3µ or less in thickness on the surface of the aluminum, then to electrolysis in an aqueous solution containing a metallic salt thereby filling the micropores of the film with deposits of the metal corresponding to the metallic salt.
