A B S T R A C T ELECTROLYTICALLY SOFTENING SEA WATER Sea water is electrolytically softened on or near an offshore platform by flowing it into contact with cathodic electrodes arranged to retain a coating of deposited multiva- lent metal salts while providing a selected degree of water softness and precipitating a by-product cementlike coating on the cathodes, with the electrodes positioned so that much of the support for their weight and space for their bulk is below the above-water portions of the platform.
