ABSTRACT Disclosed is an underwater sound projection system for low frequencies. Known systems have used impulsive drives, linear motor drives and electric motors driving a vibrating surface by a crank, cam or hydraulic pump. These systems tend to be inefficient and to have either narrow bandwidths (e.g. linear motor) or broad bandwidths (impulsive drives). The system according to the invention is efficient and can be started or stopped abruptly to control bandwidth. The system comprises a canister closed by a plate at one end and by a piston at the other. The piston is mounted by a waterproof bellows and can oscillate axially of the canister. An armature attached to the inner face of the piston is attractable by an electromagnet in the canister. A holding current through the electromagnet can hold the armature against system compliance; when turned off, the piston begins to oscillate. A capacitor discharge circuit provides a current pulse to the electromagnet to attract the armature at a time which aids the oscillatory motion of the piston.
