There is disclosed an electromagnetic actuator designed to exhibit predetermined non-linear characteristics. The actuator is designed so that as the plunger or rotor moves linearly in the stator, the gap between the plunger and stator varies in a predetermined manner. Depending on the variation in gap, different force- displacement characteristics are obtained. A method is provided for determining a given plunger and/or stator pole shape to obtain a desired force-displacement characteristic. The magnetic field intensity decreases inherently in response to the changing reluctance due to the varying gap, so that the plunger velocity is reduced non-linearly to zero and the plunger stops without appreciable overshoot at the desired position. Similarly, the actuator may be accelerated to new positions very rapidly with reduced overshoot/undershoot in very short periods of time typical of industrial applications. The actuator is designed to be modular in that various differently shaped plungers may be interchangeably used in the stator. In such anticipated applications the poles would have a fixed geometry and differently shaped plungers could be used. With each combination of the pole and plunger geometry there is a different force-displacement characteristic for the plunger.
