Abstract: An electromagnetic actuator has a tubular stator with at least two opposed, external pole pieces carrying energising windings, and a permanent magnet rotor inside the stator and rotatable about the major axis of the stator, the rotor having at least two oppositely-directed permanent magnets extending axially of the rotor and in closely spaced relation to the stator, said magnet each occupying less than 180° of the circumference of the rotor, the leading and/or trailing edge of each magnet being tapered and/or chamfered.
