A motor for a motor vehicle, a locomotive, an electricity generating plant or other relatively large apparatus includes a elongated shaft which is connected at its center to the crankshaft of the motor vehicle so that rotation of the elongated shaft about its lateral axis causes rotation of the crankshaft about its longitudinal axis; a permanent magnet connected to an end of the elongated shaft; a mechanism for generating a magnetic field in proximity with the permanent magnet; and a mechanism for selectively varying the direction of the magnetic field so as to induce motion of the permanent magnet. Alternatively, the motor includes at least one electromagnet to generate a magnetic field which attracts or repels an axially movable piston in a cylinder, while the piston is linked via a leverage rod to the crankshaft of the motor vehicle to cause rotation thereof, and the length of the leverage rod (and/or the location of a fixed pivot point about which it pivots) is selected to efficiently increase the power output of the motor.
