ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A subsurface electromagnetic sensing device for use in boreholes and mine shafts which includes a sonde for lower- ing underground which is supercooled and contains Squid gradiometers for measuring vector current density, and magnetometers for measuring vector magnetic fields. When these measured values are combined, information is obtained to construct a conductivity model of the underlying and sur- rounding subsurface region.
