ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the continuous casting of steel by a mould equipped with electromagnetic stirring means for electro- magnetically stirring the molten steel in the mould, it is desirable that the upper end surface of the electromagnetic stirring coil is positioned at the same level as the liquid steel in the mould or as close an possible to the liquid steel level, in order to obtain a sufficiently high stirring effect. To comply with this demand, a cooling box (1) having therein the electromagnetic stirring coil (6), cooling water supply system and a cooling water discharge system, comprises a cooling wall (9) for a direct contact with the molten steel (12) and constituting at least one wall of the mould. The cooling wall (9) is provided at its inner side with a plurality of cooling water passages (10) for evenly distributing the cooling water, and the chamber (2) for housing the electro- magnetic stirring coil (6) is disposed such that the upper end of the electromagnetic stirring coil (6) takes the same level as the liquid steel (12) surface in the mould. The water discharge chamber (4) is disposed just under the coil housing chamber and the water supply chamber (3) is placed just under the water discharge chamber (4), so that the cooling water is supplied through the supply chamber (3) and is then discharged through the discharge chamber (4) after flowing through the cooling water passages (10) to effectively cool the cooling wall. The portion of the rear wall of the cooling box corresponding to the coil housing chamber, opposite to the cooling wall, is provided with an opening large enough to permit the electromagnetic stirring coil (6) is to pass therethrough. The electromagnetic stirring coil (6) attached to a coil mounting plate (7") which plays also the role of a lid for closing the opening and the rear wall of the coil housing chamber. Therefore, the electromagnetic stirring coil (16) can easily be mounted and dismounted together with the mounting plate (7') into and out of the cooling box (1) to permit saving of time and labour in various protective maintenance works for the electromagnetic stirring unit (6) including the coil.
