A method of electromagnetic surveying of an area of seafloor that is thought or known to contain a subterranean hydrocarbon reservoir is described. The method includes broadcasting an EM signal from a horizontal electric dipole (HED) transmitter and obtaining vertical electric dipole (VED) response data at a remote receiver in response thereto. Survey data are analysed by comparing the VED response data with background data which are not sensitive to the postulated hydrocarbon reservoir. Accordingly, différences between the VED response data and the background data allow for the identification of buried hydrocarbon reservoirs. The background data may be provided by magneto- telluric surveying, controlled source electromagnetic surveying or from direct geophysical measurement. By employing VED response data in this way, surveys may be performed in shallower water than has previously been possible since the VED detector is not sensitive to air-wave components of the EM field induced by the HED transmitter at the VED detector.
Procédé de prospection électromagnétique d'une zone de fonds marins dont on pense ou dont on sait qu'elle contient un réservoir d'hydrocarbures souterrain. Ledit procédé consiste à diffuser un signal électromagnétique à l'aide d'un émetteur dipôle électrique horizontal (HED) et à obtenir des données de réponse reçues par un récepteur dipôle électrique vertical (VED) situé à distance en réponse au signal électromagnétique. Des données de prospection sont analysées par comparaison des données de réponse VED avec des données de base indépendantes du réservoir d'hydrocarbures soupçonné. Par conséquent, des différences entre les données de réponse VED et les données de base permettent l'identification de réservoirs d'hydrocarbures souterrains. Les données de base peuvent être obtenues par relevé magnéto-tellurique, par relevé électromagnétique à source régulée ou par mesures géophysiques directes. L'emploi de données de réponse VED de cette manière permet d'effectuer des prospections dans des eaux moins profondes que ce qui était possible jusqu'à présent étant donné que le détecteur VED n'est pas sensible aux composantes ondes aériennes du champ électromagnétique induit par l'émetteur HED au niveau du détecteur VED.
