ABSTRACT An electromagnetically controllable double membrane pump is disclosed having the following features: A piston is axially moveable in a hollow cylinder. A membrane is clamped around its periphery between end cover plates and the hollow cylinder in the region of each end face. The membrane is connected centrally to the piston. The piston has an axial through-bore, and the space between the membrane and the piston, the through-bore and the space between the other membrane and the piston are filled with an incompressible liquid. At least one excitation coil on the outer periphery of the hollow cylinder is adapted, when excited, to displace the piston into an end position. On de-energisation the piston is returned to the other end position either because of mechanical loading or through excitation of another excitation coil. The stroke movement effects displacement of the membrane relative to the respective cover plate until it abuts therewith, in such a way that a swept space of variable volume is formed therebetween. A medium to be conveyed can be sucked into this space via an inlet opening and can be discharged via an outlet opening by the other stroke movement, valves being advantageously provided which assist this. Double membrane pumps of this kind can be used in balancing systems and, in particular, in haemodialysis.
