2085225 9200186 PCTABS00010 An electromagnetically-driven punch press having an electromagnetic drive thrust motor comprising a fan-cooled solenoid winding and movable armature mounted in an elevated location arranged for (a) isolating the magnetic circuit from the die set tooling, (b) isolating electrical heating of the coil from the tooling, (c) positioning the coil and armature in an elevated location where they are readily accessible, (d) enabling convenient adjustment of: stroke length, "open" height and "shut" height, (e) enabling easy adjustment of the armature position, (f) providing four-way access to the tooling, (g) freeing the bottom of the punch press, (h) enabling multiple electromagnetic drive motors to be mounted side-by-side at the same elevated location, (i) enabling multiple electromagnetic drive motors to be stacked at multiple elevational levels one-above-another, (j) providing an elevated platform location where material-handling and/or tool-handling robots or pneumatic actuators can be installed, (k) providing an electromagnetic drive thrust motor which is removable and interchangeable among multiple die sets. A shuttle pole-piece for boosting available energy extends upwardly into the winding opening and is movably mounted with a resilient upward bias for permitting the shuttle pole-piece to move downwardly for reducing impact shock, noise and vibration upon being struck by the downwardly-moving armature upon completion of its work stroke. There are anti-skid supports for the ball bearings and ball cages of the ball-bearing bushings which carry the movable tool for preventing downward skidding of these balls and their cages when the moving tool punches down against the work material. Adjustable resilient cushioning arrests tool travel for minimizing "tool whip" and tool wear at the end of the work stroke.
