ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A braking control circuit for alternating current motor is described. As is conventional an SCR is operative when the AC voltage is disconnected from the motor winding to supply DC braking pulses to the motor winding. According to the invention, however, the braking time is divided into a first period during which the braking torque is high and a subsequent period of lower braking torque. This is achieved by applying large conductive angle pulses via the SCR during the first period and lower conduction angle pulses during the second period.
