2076381 9113416 PCTABS00007 A security tag (12), attachable to an article of merchandise (10) by means of a tack (14) received by the tag (12), includes means (44) for sensing the presence of the head (16) of the tack. The sensing means (44) causes activation of an alarm circuit in response to displacement of the tack head relative to the tag (12) resulting, for example, from an unauthorized attempt to withdraw the tack (14) from the tag (12), or severance of the tack head. The tack (14) may be coupled to the tag (12) by means of a length of coaxial cable (122) which may be used to attach the tag (12) to an article to be safeguarded. The cable (122) includes a pair of conductors (124, 126) normally insulated from each other. Contact between the conductors (124, 126) caused, for example, by an attempt to cut the cable (122), results in activation of the alarm circuit.
