-16- ELECTRONIC BOTTLE INSPECTOR HAVING PARTICLE AND LIQUID DETECTION CAPABILITIES ABSTRACT This invention relates to equipment for auto- matically detecting the presence of certain liquids and foreign objects in containers. Prior art bottle inspec- tion systems utilize an incandescent light source to provide an image of the bottom of the bottle, with a scanner or sensor array for sensing different portions of the image. Such systems merely determine relative light and dark areas and are effective only in detecting the presence of opaque objects. The disadvantages of the prior art are overcome in the present invention by means of an electronic bottle inspector having particle and liquid detection capabilities through the use of sensing systems in the visible and infra-red light range. Light from an incandescent source presents an image of the bottom of the bottle on a rotating scanner having a generally non-reflective background and one or more reflecting segments which scan the image focused thereon, with at least the reflective segments being contoured so the light falling thereon from the respective portion of the bottle bottom image is focused onto a detector. Particulate matter creates a dip in detector output. For liquid detection infra-red radiation passing through holes in the scanner is filtered to allow peaking of an infra-red detector around one of the absorption bands of the liquid and a corresponding drop in the AC coupled amplitude of the detector.
