ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: In an air-fuel ratio control system for an internal combustion engine, there is provided a switching circuit for switching the control mode of the system to a closed loop mode when the output of an exhaust gas sensor exceeds a reference voltage and to an open loop mode when the output of the exhaust gas sensor falls below the reference voltage. The switching circuit comprises a circuit for changing the reference voltage for starting and terminating the feedback control at different voltage levels of the exhaust gas sensor, thereby to rapidly switch the control from the open loop mode to the closed loop mode as soon as the temperature of the exhaust gas sensor has increased to its normal operating temperature and to rapidly switch the control from the closed loop mode to the open loop mode as soon as the engine begins to idle.
