ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION An electro-mechanical coin totalizer for newspaper vending machines and the like includes a coin chute having an arcuate shoulder, a wake-up arm, and optical sensors for measuring a chord length on coins inserted in the totalizer. A coin inserted in the coin chute travels along the arcuate shoulder, whereby coin bounce is minimized and the accuracy of coin chord measurements is enhanced. The wake-up arm biases coins against the arcuate shoulder and reduces coin bounce in direct proportion to the size of the coin.
