Taught herein is a package (150) for electronically monitoring the removal of items. An item is placed in the receiving chamber (160) of a tray (126). A circuit (156) is positioned across a gate (157) that spans the chamber (160). To access the item the user breaks the gate (157) which in turn breaks the circuit (156). The breaking of the circuit (156) is an event registered and stored by an electronic monitoring device (158) in communication with the circuit. The information stored on the monitoring device (158) may be directly viewed by the user through a display interface or communicated to a remote party for viewing.
