ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM FOR MONITORING AND CONTROLLING THE MOVEMENT OF AN ENVELOPE THROUGH A MAIL SORTING MACHINE Abstract of the Invention This invention discloses an electronic tracking sys- tem for monitoring and controlling the movement of an envelope through a mail sorting machine having a single guideway for con- veying envelopes to their designed sort bins. The guideway is formed by a plurality of deflecting gates which are arranged in pairs and aligned to provide a guideway through which an enve- lope may be conveyed. The electronic tracking system is comprised of a plu- rality of tracking circuits which are interconnected in series. One of these circuits is associated with each pair of deflecting gates to control the position of these gates. These circuits cooperate with each other to transfer a coded bin designation signal between them in synchronization with an envelope moving through the machine. Upon receipt of a coded bin designation signal, the tracking circuit processes this signal and examines it to determine if it is representative of one of the deflecting gates associated with the tracking circuit. If the signal is not representative of either of the gates associated with this circuit, these gates are maintained in their normal position al- lowing an envelope to pass through them unimpeded. If, on the other hand, the signal is representative of one of these gates, the tracking circuit causes the designated gate to be moved into the guideway so that it is capable of deflecting the ad- vancing envelope into the sort bin associated with this de- flecting gate.
