Multilevel converter comprising particularly a capacitor (C1, C2..., Cn) for each of its cells. The capacitors have rated charge voltages which are proportional to their order in the converter. It further comprises evaluation means (VMO1, VMO2..., VMOn) for evvaluating the average voltage at the terminals of each of the capacitors (C1, C2..., Cn), means (VE1, VE2..., VEn) for determining for each of the capacitors (C1, C2..., Cn) a possible deviation between the evaluated average charge voltage and the nominal average charge voltage of said capacitor and providing the corresponding deviation signals (VEC1, VEC2..., VECn), as well as correction control means (BT, EC1, EC2..., ECn) receiving said deviation signals and consequently controlling at least one temporary coupling between two capacitors in order to neutralize said deviation.
