ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hand-held, portable, self-contained, information storage unit with a keyboard through which a word, phrase or the like can be entered, stored in a random access memory (RAM) and displayed. A central processing unit including a microprocessor controls display of the entry and retrieves from a read/only memory, e.g., a ROM, a definition or trans- lation of the entry which is then displayed after entry is completed. The ROM is a plug-in module which can be replaced as simply as changing a battery in a hand-held calculator to change the information stored. The definition preferably can be rolled through the display. In addition to information retrieval, the unit can also be used to carry out ancillary functions, such as arithmetical manipulations using a calcu- lation program stored in a further ROM. - 2 -
