A modular electronic display sign for displaying colour images is described. The display sign is constructed of pixel groups respectively associated with n pixel controllers, each pixel controller controlling light sources of one of n primary colours. Image data is transmitted from a sign controller via system buses to the respective pixel controllers. Timing signals are generated at predefined refresh rate by each pixel controller. Pulse-width modulation is used to control the individual brightness of the light sources of each primary colour. A lookup table is used by each pixel controller to increase the granularity of control of the pulse width modulation. The display sign enables the display of monochromatic dichromatic or full colour images at rates exceeding 30 frames a second. The advantages include low manufacturing and maintenance cost for a high performance multi-colour display sign.
