ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Electronic equipment such as an electronic typewriter incorporates a character sequence memory. In order to make efficient use of available memory space, the latter is dynamically partitioned between a directory area and a contiguous character sequence storage area, character sequences in the latter being relocated as necessary to make room for additional directory entries. The starting addresses of the relocated character sequences are recalculated and stored in address field in the related directory entries, in order to facilitate calculation of the required directory area, and calcula- tion and recalculation of the character sequences start- ing addresses, a third memory area is reserved for stor- ing the number of character sequences.
