ABSTRACT An electronic filing system is enabled by highlighting handle information on an original document with a fluorescent marking material, and then scanning the document with an illumination source in a single pass. The reflectivity of the highlighted area is greater than the perceived reflection of the remainder of the document being scanned, and this difference in spectral reflectance is used in conjunction with a bi-level threshold sensing device to generate two output signals, one containing the document information, and the other containing only the handle information. Both signals are stored as digital information in system memory; the document is then retrieved by addressing only the handle signal.
