ELECTRONIC FISH LOCATOR Abstract of the Disclosure Apparatus for determining the depth of certain tempera- ture layers or strata in ponds, lakes, etc., in which fish of certain kinds are known to preferentially congregate is dis- closed. The disclosed apparatus includes a thermistor, an electrical wire or cable attached to the thermistor and pro- vided with depth measurement markings in a simple graphic code, and a translator circuit adapted to be attached to the end of the wire or cable remote from the thermistor for translating the resistance of the thermistor into an indication of the temperature range of the water layer or stratum in which the thermistor is immersed. The translator circuit includes a set of light-emitting diodes (LED'S) for use in indicating the temperature range of the water stratum in which the thermistor is immersed. In general, when the disclosed apparatus is in use only one LED, corresponding to the temperature of the water stratum in which the thermistor is immersed carries sufficient current to be perceptibly illuminated. At one extreme of temp- erature indication, however, a second LED may appear to be faintly illuminated. The translator circuit is battery-operated, and is self-compensating for aging variations in battery volt- age throughout the practical life of the battery, i.e., until the light produced by the illuminated LED is too dim to be readily perceived in the ambient sunlight in an open boat. Thus, manual compensating means such as manually adjustable potentio- meters are not needed in the disclosed device, and are not pro- vided. Battery drain is limited by the provision of a push- button switch which must be depressed to energize the translator circuit. The translator circuit may be encapsulated or located in a chamber separate from the battery chamber in order to isolate the translator circuit from moisture and its accompanying deleterious effects. The entire translator circuit, including its battery, the LED display, and the push-button, is so small as to be accommodated in a shirt pocket. This translator unit does not include the usual, delicate meter of the D'Arsonval type.
