ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electronic franking machine in which non-volatile me- mories are used as working memories for the ascending and descending registers. Three locations art selected in said memories to contain the same data pertaining to tile value of the ascending and/or descen- ding registers. An electronic scale provides the input data in the automatic and semi automatic modes, while in the manual mode a key- board provides the input data, A pocket size cartridge contains all the necessary electronic components that allows it to be loaded with a given amount of credit by the post office. An electronic inkjet printer is used to print a stamp even for envelopes containing stap- pled or paper clipped documents.
