ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electronic identification system is disclosed for remote identification of an object. The system may be used for identifying rail cars passing an interrogation station and has the ability of allowing a coded signal to be remotely programmed. The system includes in combination an electronic identification device located on the object, and at least one interrogation station located remotely from the object. The identification device comprises a code generator adapted to produce a predetermined coded signal representing identification of the object, the code generator having a remote means to program a programmable code memory representing the coded signal, a transmitter having a trigger circuit means which when triggered transmits the coded signal from the transmitter, a self sealing holder allowing field programming of the code generator, and a power source for the transmitter. The interrogation station comprises an interrogation signal source adapted to trigger the trigger circuit means in the trans- mitter, receiver means adapted to receive the coded signal from the transmitter, synchronization means between the trans- mitter and the receiver means and decoder means, and decoder means to decode the coded signal and produce an identification of the object.
